X3D/VRML is available for those who want to do real time 3D.  
Getting it adopted for commercial clients is the obstacle. XJ3D 
open source is available otherwise.   X3D is an XML application 
language, so you get to use the full gamut of XML tools.

If you want to use VRML 97, the previous version which is mature 
but non-XML, the Cortona client from ParallelGraphics rocks.

There's considerable need for better display of graphic data.  Something that
gives really versatile control over vector data.  If just for mundane stuff like
zooming in/out/around datasets in charts, perhaps in 3D.
