A sense of perspective (Was: Moving the list)

[ Lists Home | Date Index | Thread Index ]

I have a sense of deja vu all over again. :)

Now it's a few on XML-Dev that want to move to e-pastures green. I guess the
e-grass on the other side of the e-fence always looks #00FF00.

We have had the insistent "Let's move" phase. I was waiting to see the
intense intellectuality of the posts of which the list was being deprived by
the subscription difficulties ... the issue which would gob-smack us all with
its profundity ... the issue which whose urgency and importance justified all
the recent hot air ... but ... lo and behold ... silence! So why all the
fuss? It's not as if this is a project-orientated list which is mission
critical (at least most of the time). As Tim said there is a fair share of
permathreads and childish rants.

Let's take a little step back here.

Performance on this list is, in my view, pretty good.

Up time is what ... 99%+?

Yes, there are occasional delays ... minutes to hours ... in posts coming
through, although usually posts come through almost in real time. In my
experience delays are an intermittent characteristic of email lists
everywhere.

Yes, occasionally, there are glitches. Most (all?) lists I have been on for
extended periods have had glitches. Is anyone seriously suggesting that one
of the possible options on offer will be guaranteed problem-free? I suspect
not.

Some find it an outrage that OASIS doesn't accord XML-Dev a high priority.
Let's be realistic. If we move to W3C does anyone seriously believe that TBL
is going to treat XML-Dev as a "high priority"? Serious organisations of
significant size ... of which OASIS and W3C are examples ... have important
issues to deal with.

Are we really such a self-important bunch as to imagine that we *ought* to be
a (high) priority? Come on guys, get real. :)

If we move the list (which I see no reason at present to do) I suggest we
also change the list name. XML-TGASOOOI seems a sensible acronym, at least to
me. :)

By the way does anyone know how many are subscribed to the list?

It will be interesting to see how the "vote" goes.

If past experience is any guide I wouldn't be surprised to find that 90% of
the list doesn't vote in the poll but will vote ... not with their feet but
with their bums. They are comfortable where they are sitting ... the list
"just works" for them ... so just quietly and sensibly ignore all the
hullabaloo. Wise lurkers! :)

P.S. TGASOOOI translates as "Too Great A Sense Of Our Own Importance".
Personally I prefer XML-Dev with all its warts to XML-TGASOOOI. :) ... YMMV.
