Given that there is no a priori reason to expect any database
to have all its important structural relationships conform to a tree
structure,
schema languages based on grammars alone can never be expected to
provide a comprehensive solution to validation.

I agree- my question is, is that a reasonable expectation, or is a
layered approach more appropriate so that a user gets what they need and
doesn't have to endure the rest unless they choose to do so.
