From my experience in similar matters, I would say that waiting for
evolution to fix it will end up in the kinds of issues that we all
faced with the Y2K issues a few years back. That was a problem that
many programmers were aware of, and were content to leave to
evolution, believing that it would not get so close to the wire
before such a necessity existed, or from a belief that their
applications would not still be in use 20 years after they wrote
them. <G>
Unfortunately, I don't think it will be fixed now, since it is
not absolutely necessary to do so at the moment. Evolution will
only take over if it gets so bad that it costs more in the
short term not to fix it.

Well, we're not stuck with these things "forever." If they are really
lorts more trouble than they are worth, Father Darwin will fix them by
killing them off, sooner or later .... the trouble is that He will
"fix" a lot of other stuff that might be valuable while He is at it,
maybe including XML itself.
The question in my mind is whether the W3C (or a hypothetical "XML
Interoperability Organization" since I'll bet heavily that W3C won't
touch it) should try to fix it in a more surgical way before things
start getting really ugly? Or should we just trust evolution to sort
it all out in the long run?
