Replacement of a ubiquitously deployed technology is expensive too.
No free lunch. As my managers say, show me the numbers. (not just the
costs of the software because that is by far the cheaper of the bits
that have to be redone).

A solid, pragmatic take as far as I'm concerned is that interoperability
issues cost a lot of money, that in research, in development, in
communication, and in customer support.
Interoperable, reliable technology is a clear cost saver as far as I can
see.
