Mostly... some Mesopotamian poets/scribes amused themselves or others
by writing compositions in which the first syllable of each line
(read top to bottom, or bottom to top) spelled out a palindrome,
while and all the line-final syllables (read one or two ways) gave
the answer implicit in the riddle/question posed in the initial-syllable
palindrome.
Of course, this secret was usually hidden.
Imagine the heady experience of the modern assyriologist
who discovered this maybe in the 1960s, after a couple decades
of casual reading by others -- who, not looking for secrets,
found none.
