Related to this there was an interesting presentation at XML Prague 
earlier this year "A Time Machine for XML", discussing a third 'time' 
axis for XML, which could be navigated in Xpath as later:: or first:: 
etc. There is as yet no implementation or underlying structure to 
support this, as far as I know.

In our work we can represent multiple XML documents, e.g. versions 
through time, in a single 'delta' document and although this is very 
powerful in helping to solve a certain class of problems, it is much 
more complex that vanilla XML. And as one of the strengths of XML is its 
simplicity, it is best not to lose that.
