Am I wrong in this, or has this thread changed to 'lets invent
a new schema language'
To be fair, that's a different thread. As I read that thread, it's more about figuring out what approach to schema for MicroXML will offer a worthy level of simplicity. Yes some are calling for something new, but just as many are saying "Just use RNG, Schematron, Examplotron, etc."
