Okay, I'll ask Neil again.
He was looking at Drupal's nodewords module
http://drupal.org/project/nodewords. It would allow us to set descriptions for
every page, plus give us a lot more control over things like robots.txt files
to specifically disallow friendly search engines from indexing certain content.
He wasn't sure we'd actually use it. Would we?

It's not just for SEO.
The description in the meta tag shows up in abstracts in some search results.
