Re: [dita-fa-edboard] Tweaking the navigation

Hi Carol,

You certainly should.  I use robots.txt for my clients.

It prevents the search engines from wasting time crawling extraneous content.

Together with an accurate sitemap.xml file, these two best practices instruct the engines to find where the good stuff is.

Take a peek at http://www.ditausers.org/sitemap.xml and http://www.robots.txt as an example.

Using Google Webmaster Tools, you can see how your site pages really get improved Quality Scores when you follow their advice.

Cheers.

Bob.

Okay, I'll ask Neil again.

He was looking at Drupal's nodewords module
http://drupal.org/project/nodewords. It would allow us to set descriptions for
every page, plus give us a lot more control over things like robots.txt files
to specifically disallow friendly search engines from indexing certain content.
He wasn't sure we'd actually use it. Would we?

It's not just for SEO.

The description in the meta tag shows up in abstracts in some search results.
