Maybe. I wouldn't describe the semantic web as a technology, more
like a story of what might be; it's an old story really. Those
other 3 technologies (or 2 when you allow for DAML+OIL) have the
unenviable task of trying to be all things to all people. The
development of RSS1.0 indicates that doing this is a hard sell.
I've heard RDF described by KR folk as brain-dead. I've heard
developers call the difference between these technologies and what
really goes on in the trenches, a gulf (my own experience is that
it's more like a chasm). However, things are stacked up not unlike
hypertext a decade ago. One of those distributed AI plays will
someday genuinely disrupt the web (if not supersede it) and the
societies that use it (in contrast, web services are an
optimisation, not a disruption). To matter in Tim Bray's sense,
that play will target those in the trenches, ignoring the KR
community for the most part.
