It is accurate to say that the programmers had their say and
made their most important contributions during the design
of XML 1.0. I don't think that bought them the party for
the rest of the development.
Keep ISO 8879 alive. It is ISO that guarantees that markup
is the property of the commons. XML was a coup to make it
the property of a consortium and to bring it under the control
of a self-appointed, self-selected group that now insists
it knows best what the people need. It took a fight to
keep it a proper subset of SGML, and those who think and
still propose SGML "be stabbed in the back", are serious
idiots, well-trained, but foolish, poltitcally and socially
naive, and to be ignored.

I've stopped bowing and scraping before programmers, so I'm not sure I'd be
worried about their respect either.
Freeing markup from programmers seems the best way to ensure its continued
survival at this point.
