If one wanted to pursue a purely XLink solution, I think defining role
URIs would be sufficient. Roles allow you to express the meaning of a
link or arc. For the XHTML case, those roles could be fixed, I think.
As I think I said before, the really hard problem is dealing with
elements that have more than one attribute with link semantics
(href/longdesc).
I think Tim's rule applies, if you need more than one, use
subelements.
