Terminology: data interchange format or data exchange format?

Hi Folks,
Which is proper terminology:
The XML data interchange format is described
in http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/
The XML data exchange format is described
in http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-xml/
I searched the XML specification and it does not use the term "interchange" nor "exchange".
Apparently the JSON folks prefer the term interchange. The title of the ECMA JSON specification [1] is:
