xml and z39.50 protocol

I am wondering if
anyone has any experience with developing a library system using the z39.50
protocol and using xml as
the data transfer
from library system to database.
I am new to xml and
I can see the advantage of using xml rather than store all data in the database
and using sql to retrieve.
Any help
