There is significant difference how Selenium API is used
compared to Selenium IDE (for Firefox), as far as XPath
locators of HTML attributes and elements is concerned.
Selenium API requires writing of code to run it which adds
time to development of the tests so developer is more likely
to be looking for repeated use with lower maintenance so
yes XPath expressions might be avoided. With the IDE,
on the other hand, the IDE itself provides XPath expressions
and tests are quickly produced and can be easily replaced
rather than maintained so XPath is very popular, in my
experience / awareness. With the API I'd think a developer
would be likely to take time to separate between XPaths
and more abstract test descriptions (usually by abstracting
away from the XPath perhaps). But like I say, there is still
a place for XPath in the IDE; and important place.

So in my search to see how Selenium could help locate information
hidden in CSS I came across this.

Whenever possible, it is strongly recommended to stay away from using
unstable element locators such as xpaths to target elements
on the page. Xpaths are considerably fragile because minimal changes
in the structure of the HTML document could render current targeting
queries
invalid. In environments where the structure of the HTML document
changes frequently, keeping track of elements using XPaths can become
a maintenance nightmare.

CSS Selectors are strongly recommended over Xpaths.

In general, your choice of element locators should also not be based
on textual content in the HTML document,
whenever it is possible for you to avoid it.

Rather, it should be based on element identifiers, unique attribute
values or other structural information that is stable enough to
witstand
frequent changes to the web application without breaking the queries
used to look up the elements.
